The Time Machine in Klingon

A Klingon-only publication

H.G. Wells‘ book “The Time Machine” has been translated by German Klingonist Peter Karas, aka payqagh. The translator decided to publish his translation without a back translation, so this is a Klingon-only book. About the translator

Peter Karas is a Klingonist from Germany. He grew up with Star Trek: The Next Generation, but that was not the starting point of his interest in the Klingon language. Actually, it was Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, citing the famous Klingon quote bortaS bIr jablu’DI’ reH QaQqu’ nay’, “Revenge is a dish best served cold”, that caught his interest in 2018. Reading the Wikipedia article on the Klingon language, it stuck.

Peter Karas was intrigued by the concept to say the same thing using two absolutely different language systems and did more research on the Klingon language. He was lucky to get selected to participate in the 2018 qepHom, a Klingon language meeting in Germany, where he met with the right people. His Klingon Dictionary got signed by Dr. Marc Okrand with the words: not yIjegh – “never give up” and so he didn’t.

During the pandemic in 2021, the Klingon Language Institute (KLI) hosted its annual meeting called qep’a’ online and – having studied together with dedicated people beforhand – he challanged and passed all three KLCP (Klingon Language Certification Program) tests, a strict grading system developed by the KLI.
